STEM Field Trip – Champaign-Urbana Community Fab Lab

Tue. March 12, 2024 | 10:00 am - 12:30 pm CDT

Want to see a real live and thriving educational makerspace?

Join your fellow curious creators as we visit the C-U Community Fab Lab, an education-centered makerspace on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus. During our tour, Fab Lab staff will introduce the tools they offer alongside the projects, curricula, and learning outcomes they utilize to structure their educational programs and classes.

Later on, Fab Lab staff will answer your questions about facilitating a prosperous makerspace and lead an open discussion on the challenges and considerations of offering makerspace programming to youth learners. Along the way, we’ll also touch on a variety of pertinent topics for K-12 educators and leaders, including:

– Philosophy and values of makerspaces
– Notable outcomes and goals of makerspace programming
– Reflections from programming in both formal and informal learning environments
– Factors to consider when deciding what tools and materials to purchase and offer in your makerspace
– Example curricula for integrating maker-focused STEM learning into a K-12 environment
