How can we take students beyond being thermometers that “take the temperature” of issues in their community to being thermostats that take civic action to “change the temperature?”

Join this interactive workshop to explore how students can take the L.E.A.D. across disciplines through service learning to have a real-world impact- right from their own classroom! A mix of digital and hands-on tools will be demonstrated to help students Learn, Engage and Explore what is true for their community, take Authentic Action, and Digest and Demonstrate learning.

Mary Ellen Daneels is a National Board Certified teacher who taught at West Chicago Community High School for 27 years. She serves as the Director of the Illinois Civics Hub and Illinois Democracy School Network, leading efforts to support the implementation of the middle and high school civics course requirements and Illinois social science standards.
