Social Media & Its Impact on Student Mental Health

Tue. May 14, 2024 | 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm CDT

Outside of school (and perhaps too often, during it), today’s students are deeply intertwined with social media. While the negative interpersonal impacts of social media have been widely reported, their impacts on the classroom are only now starting to be uncovered and appraised. One troubling trend is clear – students at all grade levels are facing a mental health crisis, and in some cases, social media is adding fuel to the fire.

What can educators do to mitigate these potential negative impacts? How can we identify the warning signs of negative social media interactions, and what can we do to help students before they reach the point of crisis?

Join us as we explore current research about young people and social media, including trends in platform use and changes in online culture over the past several years. Along the way, participants will also learn to recognize warning signs of declining mental health in students as well as strategies and resources for helping students access the support they need to change their habits and improve their mental health.
