Media Literacy in a Social Media World

Thu. April 11, 2024 | 9:00 am - 2:30 pm CDT

Today’s students are continuously exposed to media, especially online. This everyday media exposure can open them to a world of new discoveries, including a world of misinformation that can foster a variety of negative online behaviors in turn. While numerous students today express interest in joining this digital media landscape as a creator or influencers, they won’t be able to do that if their media literacy skills aren’t sharp. So, what can we do right now to capture that passion for creating and translate it into our curriculum?

Join us for this timely workshop, where we’ll take a broad look at today’s media landscape and appraise the role today’s students might play in the future. Along the way, we’ll highlight many of the core competencies digital content creators need to succeed, whether they go on to become YouTube influencers or social media managers. From there, we’ll also explore a few ways to add those essential skills to the curriculum and ensure today’s learners grow to become tomorrow’s passionate, responsible digital content creators.
