With new AI tools rapidly emerging, we are making the shift from tools that curate to tools that create. This is a big different, and we are only just on the cusp of the radical changes that will soon emerge. While no one can exactly predict how AI will impact our society, we know that it WILL, and we can begin to make preparations for how best to serve our students within this substantially different environment.

We’ve already witnessed humanity’s first encounter with AI – via social media curation – and seen that despite many of the positive resources social media can provide, these AI tools also integrate deeply into the fabric of our society. From politics and finance, to culture and discourse, the nature of our reality shifted thanks to these introductory AI tools aimed at our brains. We learned that such tools easily manipulated human weaknesses and made us, in many respects, the worse off for it. With the next wave of generative AI – such as ChatGPT – we need to be on the alert for safely harnessing these new powers without letting them too far out of control.

This presentation will explore what new AI tools and features are emerging, examine how these can be ethically leveraged by students and educators, and expand on the broader implications for students and society how these tools will likely impact culture, institutions, news, mental health, and much more. Educators will come away with a greater awareness of what the current status and trajectory of AI development is, what tools their students are or will soon be leveraging, and how to productive broach these tools within the educational setting.
