IL House Bill 234 states that every public high school is required to include in its curriculum a unit of instruction on media literacy. As a journalism teacher, I have been addressing this topic for many years.

This session will equip educators to meet the requirement for teaching media literacy no matter their subject area. I will go over some basic information on the topic as well as sharing online resources that teachers can use to help their students practice the skills needed to be more savvy consumers of media messages.

With an increasing reliance on the internet for research and an increasing reliance on social media for news, I believe it’s vital for both teachers and adults to have the necessary tools to distinguish news from standards-based journalism organizations from those who simply pose as them.
