ISBE AI Guidance Quick Hits

The Illinois State Board of Education released statewide Artificial Intelligence Guidance in July 2026, developed under Public Act 104-0399. This two-page handout pulls out the talking points district leaders are most likely to need when briefing a board, cabinet, or staff.

The handout covers:

  • The four foundational tenets that should anchor every AI decision, policy, or tool purchase
  • A three-tiered policy structure: board policy, acceptable use policy addendum, and informed use norms
  • A three-step “goodness-of-fit” vetting process for AI tools
  • Legal and data privacy alignment with SOPPA, FERPA, and ISSRA
  • Starting small with bounded “Innovation Zone” pilots

This is a summary, not a substitute for the full guidance. For the complete framework, role-specific guidance, and ISBE’s Quick Start FAQ, visit isbe.net/aiguidance.
