Illinois Computer Literacy Guidelines Planning Document

In May 2022, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) published its Computer Literacy Knowledge and Skill Development Continuum, which describes the computer skills students should build from kindergarten through 12th grade. This planning document puts those guidelines into a Google Sheet that schools and districts can copy and use to map the skills to their own curriculum.

The 61 skills are grouped into four strands: Basic Operations, Concepts, and Keyboarding; Data Management and Security; Internet Searching and Online Databases; and Multimedia, Software Applications, and Collaboration Tools. For each skill, the sheet marks the grade where students are expected to be Beginning (B), Developing (D) and Secured (S), so you can see how a skill grows from one grade to the next.

LTC added Curriculum Links and Notes columns so your team can record where each skill is taught and which resources support it. Along with the full K-12 view, separate tabs break the guidelines out by grade band (K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12), which makes it easier for grade-level teams, instructional leaders and library media specialists to plan together.
