Wireless Communication Devices in Schools (SB 2427)

Beginning with the 2027-2028 school year, every Illinois public school district (including charter schools and Chicago Public Schools)  must adopt and implement a “bell-to-bell” policy that prohibits student use of cell phones and other wireless communication devices during school time (SB 2427, Public Act 104-0657).

This brief covers key dates, which devices are covered, required policy elements, exceptions districts must allow (medical needs, IEP and 504 plans, English learners, and student caregivers), limits on enforcement, and what districts should plan for now.
