Technology & the Law: What Every School Leader Must Know (AA#4230)
Wed. March 11, 2026 | 9:00 am - 12:00 pm CDT
This Administrator Academy provides Illinois school and district leaders with a comprehensive and actionable understanding of the legal frameworks that govern the use of technology in K-12 education. Participants will explore critical federal and state statutes-including FERPA, SOPPA, COPPA, and PPRA-as well as evolving guidance around AI, data breach response, accessibility compliance (e.g., WCAG 2.1), and vendor agreements. The course will delve into legal responsibilities related to digital platforms, cloud services, cybersecurity planning, and student biometric data collection, with an emphasis on how these intersect with policy decisions and ethical leadership.
Leaders will analyze current district practices through a legal lens, evaluate sample data privacy agreements and technology contracts, and assess policies related to digital learning and device use. By the end of the session, participants will be prepared to guide their districts in implementing legally compliant, student-centered, and future-ready technology initiatives while navigating stakeholder concerns and aligning district practices to current legal obligations and best practices.
