Verify B4U Amplify – How2INFORM: Combating Misinformation Online

September 16
10:55 am - 11:45 am
Information & News Literacy
Library and Media Specialists, Teachers

Kids spend 6-9 hours online each day where harmful content persists. Adolescents are more likely to share information if it connects with their interests, whether the information is true or not. Increasing media literacy and online critical thinking skills can help children identify and avoid false narratives related to recruitment and mobilization to violence.

In 2021, IL HB0234 passed, requiring all public high school curriculum to offer at least one unit of media literacy training in the 2022-23 school year. How2INFORM has training geared toward combating misinformation online. We cover topics on misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation; giving resources to help provide kids with ways in which to avoid false information. Our call to action is for students to “Verify B4U Amplify.”

After this session, attendees will understand:

  • The differences between misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation
  • What is How2INFORM and how our classroom-ready resources can it be used to combat false information
