As a former K-5 librarian and illustrator of children’s books, I’m always looking for ways to engage students in stories. In this session, I will talk about how to go beyond worksheets and discussions in order to have deeper learning and promote critical thinking with elementary students. I will talk about specific read-alouds that I have used in the classroom, and ideas for how you can tie these books to makerspace/problem-based learning and projects. These ideas can be applied to other favorite read-aloud books and personalized for individual teacher preferences and classroom environments. I’ll cover multimedia/video projects, design challenges, and building/creative ideas and tools for student use.
