Students today are immersed in media messages; how well are we preparing them to engage with – and create – these messages?

To address this question, Illinois has released a Media Literacy mandate for high schools in the 2022-23 school year. This session will break down the expectations for teachers written in House Bill 0234 and will provide a roadmap for planning instruction around them. You will learn why media literacy is more important than ever, and how you can build lessons and units that engage students in dialogue and self-reflection around important media literacy topics. We will demonstrate and explore resources and activities that you can use in your classroom immediately.

Topics will include deconstructing media images, creating persuasive content, identifying fake news, evaluating sources, navigating social media, and more!
